Videos of the Elektron Machinedrum in use / Machinedrum demos:

Techno demo:

With joystick controller:

Italian introduction:

sing the Elektron Machinedrum as a MIDI Drum Controller:

You can use the 16 step sequencer pads on the Elektron Machinedrum to control any other MIDI-enabled sound module. For example,
If you want to control a rackmount synth (like Novation DrumStation) just connect the MD via MIDI and you can control up to 16 channels with a 64 step on-board sequencer - effectively a futuristic Roland 909! - Some will see great benefit in being able to use the Machinedrum not only as the sythnesizer it is, but also as a rhythm generator for any other sound module in their studio. Examples of hardware (dedicated) drum modules that are known to work as a slave with the Machinedrum sequencer are:

  • Alesis D4

  • Kawai XD-5

  • Sequential Circuits TOM

  • E-mu Procussion

  • Novation D-Station

  • Vermona DRM-1 / DRM-1 mkII

  • Roland TR-505 - 909

  • Casio RZ-1

Dont forget that you can run the Machinedrum through the drum kits on almost any hardware synthesizer too. To eliminate any significant delay in the MIDI signals between the Machinedrum and your slave module, one needs to employ the Turbo MIDI Interface to boost the output signal from the Machinedrum. This Interface is normally included with the package when you order your Machinedrum. See the official site for more information on this.

Can I use the Machinedrum to control Native Instruments Battery?

Yes, it is also possible to map the MIDI signals from the Machinedrum to a standalone verison or hosted version of Native Instruments Battery. Like this, you can map the individual MIDI output channels from the Machinedrum to specific cells within your Battery kit. Cells will be pre-allocated by default in a the GM (General MIDI) sequence, but I was told by a support guy at Native Instruments in Germany that it is possible to also customise the layout of the MIDI signals on the cells (if you really want to do that!).

This ability to intergrate Battery and the Machiendrum together is good for those who wish to leave out the recording of MIDI in their sequencer whilst producing and tweaking drums on computer. A great addition for a lot of producers like me who are reluctant to completely abandon hands-on hardware production techinques.

Thinking of buying a Machinedrum?

What's the difference between the Elektron Machinedrum MKII and MKII UW?

Below is the Machinedrum SPS-1 UW (user wave) MKII specifications, and below that is a list of differences with the Machinedrum SPS-1 MKII:

  • 1 x sticker set (untouched)

  • 3 x Elektron product leaflets

  • 1 x owners manual

Specifications: SPS-1 MKII functionality

  • 64 step patterns

  • 5x MD synths

  • 2,5 MB sample memory

  • 12-bit dynamic sample engine

  • 48x ROM sample slots

  • 4x RAM realtime sampling machines

  • 16 track percussion sequencer

  • 16x LFO’s

  • Full realtime control

  • Six audio outputs

  • Two audio inputs

  • Compact hi-quality design

  • Large back-lit LCD

  • Full MIDI implementation

Differences between the above and a MKII:

  • The MKII has NO internal sampler
